Nauvoo

This last summer we decided to take our family trip to Nauvoo Illinois to see the church history site. We live about 12 to 14 hours away, so we thought we might as well do this while we have a chance. So, Bri took off a few days of work and we packed up the car and did it. The ride was long, but not too bad. We got a few books on tape, a whole lot of movies, books, and we were set. The only one who really had a hard time was Raegan, since she didn't understand the books on tape and she can only take so many movies...

Nauvoo was great. Being there and seeing it, really put things into perspective for me. The saints had such a beautiful place and had put so much of their lives into building it and making it their home. We were only there for a day and an evening. We got to see the Nauvoo pageant though, and it was amazing. The next morning I took a run around Nauvoo and the mississippi river. Then, we took a wagon ride, a carriage ride and toured a few of the buildings. I was sad when we had to leave because you could definitely stay there a week or so if you had the time (and the reservations! Phew, they go fast!). I can't wait to go back.

On our drive home to MD, we decided to go see Chicago and the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower). We thought it would be fun to go up to the tallest building in the U.S., so we paid the outlandish fee and did it. We were waiting for about two and a half hours to get to the top. We met a really nice LDS man from Hawaii right behind us though, who made the time go much faster. The top was great and we got to step out in the glass boxes and look all the way down. We stayed there for all of fifteen minutes. Lesson learned, never go to the Willis Tower on Saturday...

Next we went out to a restaurant known for Chicago's famous pizza. We waited for about an hour for the pizza, but it was totally worth it! It has two layers of crusts stuffed on the top, middle, and bottom. Yummy! My kids can't stop talking about it.

The last day we decided to visit Brian's old mission in Detroit. Yes, the most crime ridden city in the U.S. We first went to the temple, which is beautiful and is in a very beautiful neighborhood. Then we decided to drive down to the inner city of Detroit and look around, quickly... And, it was quick. It was getting a little dark and I was getting a little nervous in the inner city with four little girls so we left after a half hour or so, but it was amazing to see what Brian had lived in for two years! We couldn't even find any of his old aparment building because they had been burned down or torn up. It made me realize how lucky I am to have what I have. I feel very blessed to live where I do and have so many things that are so easily taken for granted.

What a fun trip. We keep saying we are going to go, but it always seems like a trip to visit family comes first. Some time we will do it.

What! THey changed the name of the Sears Tower? When did this happen. They can't just go around changing names of famous things. I always forget to call them by the new name. I still call Macey's ZCMI and that was two names ago!

I love Nauvoo. You really could spend about a week or so there. I love going in all the houses and seeing how they lived. I thought it would be fun to be one of the missionaries there when I was in college that do the pagent at night and take people on tours during the day.

Sounds so fun! It's quite the drive! It's funny how you feel invincible as a missionary in a dangerous city. It's quite the opposite as a mom concerned about your little ones!

Sounds like a fun trip. I LOVE Nauvoo! While it is cold, if you can ever visit in the winter, I would suggest it. You get to appreciate what the weather was when the Saints left for Utah. Plus, no crowds so the missionaries tell you a lot more cool things!
